David Walshaw

David Walshaw was born in Castleford West Yorkshire. He showed considerable talent for sketching and drawing from an early age, but says that sadly, a memorable 1950s Grammar School education followed by architectural studies directed him away from the pursuit of a career as a professional artist to a lifetime career in Architecture and the building form.

Producing engrossing illustrative perspectives of design project's over many years, in Architectural Practice, saw the development of a strong technique in the use of watercolour and mixed media which evolved as loose or detailed interpretations dependent on the subject. Having retired from his Architectural Practice to paint full-time, those same techniques continue to evolve today, in a more relaxed environment of painting in the studio or en plain air.

He has shown annually at the Gargrave Art Show from 2009 to 2013 twice winning best in show. North Yorkshire Open Studios 2013, Ilkley Art Show 2013, a solo show at Hemsley Art Centre in 2014 and a award winner at Patchings Art Centre International Art Competition 2014. More recently he was one of eight artists chosen by a committee, headed by Ken Howard RA, to be featured in the Artists Selection Exhibition at Patchings Art Centre, Nottingham in 2015. The exhibition was sponsored by 'The Artist' magazine.

David and his family has lived in the Yorkshire Dales for the past 40 plus years. Dales living coupled with a working life in the hustle and bustle of Northern Cities has greatly developed his awareness for both landscape and townscape, though recent work has shown a fascinating drift into marine art.

He states a growing desire to develop skills in oil painting, but watercolour has developed as his preferred medium during the past decade, intense watercolours producing mostly representational images. His work has considerable content, thus, balance and composition becomes so important with texture, tone and depth of field all playing part to achieve emotion and atmosphere in the finished piece.

He says, ' Dales landscapes provide daily intense inspiration, but I draw inspiration from travels to anywhere, home or abroad, and from environments architectural, mountainous or marine. Such is the continuing excitement of it all'.
